Serbian Orthodox Church

The building was erected in honour of Saint Nicholas in 1778 in Baroque style to serve the local Serbian community which migrated to Szeged during the Ottoman occupation of Serbia.

The interior is typical to Orthodox Christian churches. The iconostasis, which divides the altar from the nave, is the most ornate part of the church. Designed in the rococo style, it consists of 74 icons. The two side doors in the iconostasis, called the Deacon's Doors, are for those who help in the liturg. At the center is the King's Door, used by the priests.

The church sustained heavy damage in the flood of 1879, and was renovated from 1880 to 1881. During the renovation, the little-known Slovak artist Jan Hodina painted a fresco on the ceiling depicting the creation of the world.
